The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the policy for regulated qualifications in the Australian education and training system. The AQF was first introduced in 1995 to underpin the national system of qualifications in Australia, encompassing higher education, vocational education and training (VET), and schools. The AQF is the agreed policy of Commonwealth, State and Territory ministers, and is administered by the Department of Education.

The AQF provides an integrated policy that comprises:

  • the learning outcomes for each AQF level and qualification type

  • the specifications for the application of the AQF in the accreditation and development of qualifications

  • the policy requirements for issuing AQF qualifications

  • the policy requirements for qualification linkages and student pathways

  • AQF qualifications and qualification pathways

  • the policy requirements for the addition or removal of qualification types in the AQF, and the definitions of the terminology used in the policy.

Certificates I–IV

Certificates I–IV provide essential skills and knowledge, preparing students for entry-level employment, further education, or specialized training. These flexible qualifications vary in duration and focus on practical, hands-on learning. Generally, a Certificate III requires the completion of Year 10, while a Certificate IV typically requires Year 11 or equivalent. These programs are widely accessible and foundational for career development.

Bachelor Degree and Honours

The Bachelor Degree is Australia’s most widely recognized university qualification and is valued worldwide. Most programs take three to four years to complete and are classified as Level 7 qualifications. Honours degrees, awarded for exceptional academic performance, involve an additional year of study for three-year courses or are integrated into four-year programs, enhancing both academic and professional prospects.

Masters degree

The Master’s Degree is a Level 9 qualification that builds advanced expertise and knowledge in a specific field. Most programs require two years of full-time study, with entry typically requiring a completed bachelor’s degree, often with honours. Study options include Coursework, Research, or Extended formats, catering to diverse academic and professional goals. These qualifications are primarily delivered by universities and selected private institutions.

Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree

Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Associate Degrees deliver advanced training and specialized skills. These qualifications take one to three years to complete and are equivalent to one or two years of a university degree. They are commonly offered by TAFE colleges, community education centres, and private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). These courses bridge the gap between vocational training and higher education, opening pathways to skilled employment or further study.

Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma

Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas are advanced Level 8 qualifications designed for those with a completed bachelor’s degree or higher. These courses typically take six months to one year to complete and provide specialized knowledge in a focused area of study. Offered by universities and private institutions, they serve as pathways to further academic qualifications, such as a Master’s Degree, or as tools for career advancement.

Doctoral degree

A Doctoral Degree is Australia’s highest academic qualification, classified as Level 10. Earning this degree requires completing a significant original research project and submitting a thesis that is externally assessed by experts. Typically awarded by universities, this qualification represents a significant academic achievement. Graduates are entitled to use the title ‘Doctor,’ showcasing their expertise and contribution to their chosen field.
